What is VIES?

VIES (VAT Information Exchange System) is the European Commission's official system that allows checking the validity of VAT numbers registered by EU member states' tax authorities.

Why does an existing company's VAT number show as invalid?

There can be several reasons: a typo, a registration not yet processed, a suspended VAT number, or a temporary delay in the member state system. If in doubt, contact the relevant tax authority.

Do you store my VAT number?

We store the result of the check in masked form, for a limited time, for security and statistical purposes. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Is the service free?

Basic VAT number checking is free. An optional, paid, more detailed company report will be available in the future.

Is this an official EU service?

No. This is an independent information service that queries the official VIES system, but it is not an official website of the European Union or a national tax authority.
